2 January 2020

By Kien Lee

Born in Australia and now residing in Singapore, Jarrod Lim through his eponymous design studio is renowned for his work in furniture, interior design, art direction and branding.

Besides having stints in his career that include studio of Patricia Urquiola in Milan and the furniture brand SCP in London, Jarrod has also received various international accolades, from the Pinnacle Awards in the US, the A&D Trophy Awards in Hong Kong, the Singapore Furniture Design Awards to the Young Designer of the Year in Australia.

His designs for Royal Selangor Pewter garnered a win in the Metals Category at the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2018. He has also been commissioned to design furniture for Amara Hotel as well as the interior design of Oasia Hotel, both located in Singapore. Recently, he also contributed one of the product designs for the bean bags as part of 50th Anniversary of Zanotta brand's iconic Sacco, showcased at Salone del Mobile.

Jarrod's style is intuitive, unique and refined. There is a level of thoughtfulness that might elude the naked eye, yet captured sensorially - be it a touch, or deeper, a feeling. Jarrod explains...

"The signature style in many of
my creations is a subtle blend of
Eastern and Western cultures,
lifestyle and heritage, to create
something totally new and
completely unexpected."

Exploration of materials, processes and human interaction, regularly feature in his designs and every project aims to provide a new and remarkable experience.

"When I start, I try to find the
essence of an idea, to identify
its origin, to pin down what we
experience and then to bring all
of that front and centre into
the best light."

In this feature in partnership with Audemars Piguet's new CODE 11:59 collection, Jarrod talks about his "11:59 moment", the moment before a significant event.

For him, it is a crescendo and culmination of his work process. "I’m constantly making decisions regarding the scale, the proportion, the materials or any number of other aspects that may go into creating a new product."

"I continuously refine until
nothing furthers needs to be
changed. At this moment,
the product is ready.
That is my 11:59 moment.
