Louis Vuitton Adorns Island Maison with Celebratory Facade

28 September 2021

By Peter Vossner

In celebration of two hundred years since the birth of its founder, Louis Vuitton has unveiled a celebratory façade on its Marina Bay Sands Island Maison.

Set against the distinctive Singapore skyline and overlooking passers-by along the Marina Bay Sands promenade, the façade of the only floating Maison in the world displays a larger-than-life portrait of Louis Vuitton specially developed for the bicentennial, rendered in checkered pixels.

The celebrations officially commenced on 4 August 2021, with similar celebratory windows seen on iconic Louis Vuitton stores around the world including New York's Fifth Avenue, Tokyo Shibuya, Shanghai Plaza 66, and Hong Kong Landmark. These displays will continue until November 2021.

Titled 200 Louis, the Louis Vuitton windows – historically, the Maison’s stage to showcase its craftmanship – will display the desires, fears and dreams of our time, created in tandem with 200 talents, special friends and visionaries around the world.

Apart from the store façade, there will be three different windows formats unveiled across Louis Vuitton’s 460 stores around the world. Within the windows of Louis Vuitton flagships, a screen-panelled trunk floats in mid-air, displaying the creations as an ongoing video loop. Framed by curtains against a black backdrop, the effect is dramatic – a magic box illuminated by a montage of artistic output.

A second variation involves a giant, robot-like figure composed of boxes that nods to the way Louis would stack trunks in his windows.

Finally, 200 Louis will appear in several locations as a dimensional Damier whereby a print of each creation is set within a grid constructed of cubes. Twice a day, the paper layer of each will be lifted from each cube and reused as packaging or shared with customers.
