Alpine Eagle - the New Watch Icon by Chopard

First launched in 2019, the Alpine Eagle collection by Chopard is the culminative effort of three generations of gentlemen in the Scheufele family. The story has it that the third generation scion Karl-Fritz had wanted to work on a new watch model, and not having the immediate blessing of his father Karl-Friedrich, the current co-President of Chopard, he went to his grandfather Karl, the chairman. With help, Karl-Fritz was able to produce the prototype for the Alpine Eagle, which would get the buy-in from his father to greenlight the collection.

Karl-Fritz got his inspiration from the St. Moritz watch which he had stumbled across on his father's desk six years ago. In fact, the St. Moritz was his father's own personal milestone, as it was his first watchmaking creation, done so at the age of 22 - coincidentally the same age Karl-Fritz was when he came up with the idea for Alpine Eagle.

Launched in 1980, the St. Moritz named after Karl-Friedrich's favourite Swiss alpine resort town, was Chopard's first ever sports watch.

The name for the newly-launched Alpine Eagle is inspired by and evokes the power of the eagle and the beauty of the Alps, and everything from its chronometer-certified movement by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), to the case, dial and bracelet, are entirely crafted in Chopard's watchmaking workshops by the Artisans of the Maison.

The contemporary and elegant collection is an exciting new addition to the industry's sports watch segment, and is distinctly defined:

  • a round case with stylised flanks
  • a crown engraved with the compass rose
  • a bezel with eight functional indexed screws
  • a textured dial with deep hues and luminescent indications
  • an integrated metal bracelet.

New Additions in 2020

In 2020, six new models have been added to the collection.

Firstly, two large format models with a case and bracelet entirely crafted in 18-carat rose gold, measuring 41 mm in diameter, add to the Lucent Steel A223 or bi-material versions already available.

The first features a textured brass Aletsch Blue dial, which pays tribute to the largest Alpine glacier in Switzerland. The second with a Bernina Grey dial, is a nod to the eponymous mountain range stretching between Switzerland and Italy and features a diamond-set bezel.

Both boast an impressive 60-hour power reserve, mechanical movement with automatic winding, and the Chopard 01.01-C calibre; developed and manufactured by Chopard’s in-house Artisans.

The third is a small model in Lucent Steel A223 with an Aletsch Blue dial complemented by diamond setting on its bezel, measuring 36 mm in diameter. It joins seven similarly-sized references in Lucent Steel A223, ethical gold or bi-material interpretations. It is driven by the Chopard 09.01-C calibre, offering 42-hour power reserve.

Lucent Steel A223 is an innovative new steel alloy exclusive to Chopard, achieved by a recasting process resulting in an extremely luminous, sturdy and anti-allergenic metal. It is the result of four years of research and development by Chopard.

The New Alpine Eagle XL Chrono

For the first time, a flyback chronograph is being offered in the Alpine Eagle collection. Three versions, the first in Lucent Steel A223 with an Aletsch Blue, the second also in Lucent Steel A223 with Absolute Black dial, and a bi-material version combining Lucent Steel A223 and ethical rose gold with an Absolute Black dial.

Sized at 44 mm, the Alpine Eagle XL Chrono is as its name suggests, the extra large case size is new to the collection which until now had offered references in 41 mm and 36 mm. The more imposing models follow the shape of men's wrists and provide ample space to house a sophisticated chronograph movement. The discreet right-hand pushers are subtly integrated on either side of the crown guards and preserve the collection’s characteristically harmonious shape and symmetry.

Inside, the Chopard 03.05-C movement provides a 60-hour power reserve and features an elaborate design guaranteeing accurate adjustments and optimal use of the timing functions. Equipped with a column wheel, it is also enhanced by several technical innovations that have earned Chopard no less than four patents.

A feather-shaped seconds hand sweeps over the sunburst Aletsch Blue or Absolute Black dials, punctuated by raised counters. The tachymeter scale is accentuated with red 100, 160 and 240 graduations, along the inner bezel ring. It is divided into four steps, with different intervals of 5, 10, 20 or 40 km/h per line. This arrangement facilitates reading average speed measurements and contributes to the dial’s overall aesthetic dynamic and harmony.
