Since 2014, Chopard has supported Porsche Motorsport as its "Official Timing Partner" and once again did so for the German team for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016.
On 18 and 19 June 2016, Porsche went for its 18th victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans after an extraordinary first and second-spot triumph in 2015, and it secured the win with one of the most dramatic finishes in the competition's history, overtaking the front-running Toyota as it lost power and stalled just past the finish line on its final lap.
To mark the occasion (and on hindsight, a superlative decision), Chopard presents the Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Black Edition chronograph, produced in a 100-piece limited series and inspired by the new Porsche 919 Hybrid 2016.
Exclusively available in Chopard boutiques, the limited Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Black Edition is imposing with its 45 mm-diameter case made in titanium, an ultra-light material much favoured in the world of endurance racing. The case is bead-blasted, blackened by a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) treatment ensuring an extremely scratch-resistant coating, and water-resistant to 100 metres.
On the bezel is a lacquered titanium tachymetric scale, secured by eight PVD-coated blackened screws. The matt black rubber-moulded screw-lock crown bears a steering wheel emblem, while the two pushers are respectively coated in red rubber at 2 o’clock (chronograph start-stop functions) and black rubber at 4 o’clock (zero-reset function).
An interesting groove detail in the middle of the case evokes the cooling fins of race-car engines, reminiscent of the Porsche 919 Hybrid's own rear diffuser. In addition, a red 919 logo on the dial re-emphasizes its connection to the competition cars.
With its matt black dial features red counter hands, minutes markers and central sweep-seconds hand, the Superluminova-painted Arabic numerals, hours and minutes hands as well as metallic hour-markers, are highly noticeable and readable.
Inside, the mechanical self-winding chronograph movement with the Chopard Calibre 03.05M is entirely produced and assembled in Chopard's Fleurier Ebauches workshops, with its precision certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).>
The movement delivers a substantial 60-hour power reserve and features a flyback function.
The sapphire crystal case-back is engraved with the inscription "Official Timing Partner Porsche Motorsport".
A black rubber strap inspired by competition racing tyres, secured by a folding clasp in DLC-coated titanium, tops off this magnificent winning timepiece.
