Yonex Kicks off 75th Anniversary Celebrations With Retro-Modern Collection

By Peter Vossner

2021 marks the 75th Anniversary of Yonex, a sports manufacturing company founded in 1946 in the countryside of Japan. In a year long celebration, the sports equipment and apparel label has kicked things off with a retro-modern product line-up that instills a sense of nostalgia, yet touting innovative technologies and materials.

Forty years ago, in the early 1980’s, Yonex products incorporated blue and green accents into a white base. Pleated skirts were in, preppy, polo shirts made a statement, and simple, bold designs became a now-iconic look. Taking this decade's look that saw historic achievements and combining it with modern-day technological advances, the 75th Anniversary Collection was created.

Starting at the Australian Open 2021, Yonex-partnered players will be wearing the 75th Elite Collection and carrying the 75th racquet bags. For cooler days, the 75th Sweater may accompany players on court, while the Stadium Jacket will be worn on off days.

The apparel utilizes key technologies like VERYCOOL, which provides a significant cooling effect during exercise. While still staying true to the iconic 80’s look, the fit of the apparel is modernized to meet the needs of today's players. Eco-friendly, sustainable materials were also incorporated in select apparel, bags, and accessories.

To point the way forward for the next 75 years, Yonex's Research and Development team sourced natural, plant-based fibers and recycled polyester for models housed within the Elite Collection.

For select 75th Anniversary bags, REPREVE recycled polyester from plastic bottle waste is utilized.

For me, it's an honour to be representing Yonex during their 75th Anniversary. I have played with Yonex racquets and worn the apparel for many years now and couldn’t picture myself in something else.

This is a milestone for the brand and to be a part of it definitely feels special."
Stan Wawrinka, 3-time Grand Slam Champion
