In the quiet study of the Earth's night sky, an immense blue universe emerges. It is here, among infinite observations of the planets and stars, that Roger Dubuis has embraced a wondrous and vast colour from above and placed it on the dial of a new calendar timepiece. Making its mark at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar expresses a compelling shade through classic fine watchmaking and the Maison's own signature precision.
The heart of this creation lies in a passion for the biretrograde, a complication that founder Mr. Roger Dubuis believed should be expressed with simplicity and a certain form of playfulness. Guided by this philosophy, he developed a patented display in 1989 that streamlined the traditional mechanism to enhance both beauty and performance. This ingenious construction purposely evoked joy and emotion for the wearer, reimagining the retrograde movement through a pure yet clever technical lens.
Today, the 40 mm timepiece continues that story of biretrograde choreography. Angled, skeletonized hands trace the day and date with striking clarity, provoking an emotional response as the dynamic energy of the movement unfolds on the wrist. This performance is powered by the automatic RD840 Calibre, which delivers a 60 hour power reserve and features a sculpted oscillating weight inspired by the Maison's first design from 1996.
Crafted entirely in 316L stainless steel, the watch is elevated through a mix of polishing, shot blasting, and satin brushing to create a variety of light reflecting surfaces. The seven levels of the signature multi-layered dial showcase the Roger Dubuis colour known as "Cosmic Blue". This specific shade represents the inspiring sky on Earth when daytime blue darkens into night, bringing the curiosities of space into view.
The meticulous craftsmanship required for the Poinçon de Genève certification is visible through the sapphire caseback. Every component of the Calibre RD840 is hand decorated to meet this exacting benchmark, utilizing 14 finishing techniques such as circular graining and Côtes de Genève. This hallmark represents a philosophy where performance, provenance, and aesthetics are inseparable.
Roger Dubuis completes this horological tribute to the sky with a multi-link stainless steel bracelet for traditional style. For those seeking an alternate look, an additional blue rubber strap with a triple folding clasp is also included. Through precise calendars and horological displays, these novelties do not merely indicate the hours, they also pay tribute to the motion and beauty found beyond our planet.
