Tiffany & Co. unveils the Bird on a Rock Legacy Tanzanite watch: a jeweled ode to Schlumberger’s timeless vision
Tiffany & Co. continues its storied tradition of transforming time into art with the debut of the Bird on a Rock Legacy Tanzanite watch — a luminous homage to Jean Schlumberger’s legendary 1965 brooch. Celebrated as one of the greatest jewelry designers of the 20th century, Schlumberger found endless inspiration in nature, and none of his creations embody his whimsical genius more vividly than the diamond-set bird poised upon a brilliantly colored gemstone.
Reimagined in miniature upon the dial, the iconic Bird on a Rock takes flight in exquisite detail. At its heart glows a 2.72-carat cushion-cut tanzanite, secured by prongs textured like delicate talons — a gem that harks back to Tiffany’s pioneering role in introducing the stone to the world in 1968, just after its discovery near Mount Kilimanjaro. The gemstone is framed by a mother-of-pearl dial engraved with floral motifs, a tender nod to Schlumberger’s Caribbean retreat in Guadeloupe. A diamond-set flange encircles the display, shimmering like morning light across water.
Turn the watch over, and another surprise awaits: a loupe-lined aperture that reveals the reverse of the tanzanite, a secret beauty only a jeweler would think to celebrate. The 36 mm case itself glitters with snow-set diamonds — a feat demanding nearly 55 hours of artistry — while the hand-sculpted 18k gold bird, set with 119 diamonds and a pink sapphire eye, requires a further 24 hours of meticulous craft. On the caseback, a radiant sunburst engraving inspired by Schlumberger’s Floral Arrows brooch discreetly conceals the time-setting push button.
More than a watch, the Bird on a Rock Legacy is an objet d’art: a dazzling fusion of heritage, craftsmanship, and imagination that transforms every glance at the wrist into a moment of wonder.
